Opening ceremony of “The Palestinian National Center for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection at PPU”

And, the Celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health Professionals with support of the European Union and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

As part of a cooperation programme between the European Union, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Ministry of Labour, today in Hebron Governorate "The Palestinian National Center for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection at PPU” was officially launched. Under the auspices of His Excellency Mr. President Mahmoud Abbas, Dr. Rami Hamdalleh the Prime Minister, Mr. Mamoun Abu Shahla the Minister of Labour, and Mr. Ahmad Saed Tamimi the Chairman of the Palestine Polytechnic University Board of Trustees celebrated the opening of the “Palestinian National Center for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection at Palestine Polytechnic University COSHEP”.

The center was established by the funding of the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), in close cooperation with the Hebron Local Employment and TVET (LET) Council. Due to the crucial necessity and worldwide continuous call for insuring occupational safety and public health, and regarding the need to apply labour safety regulations and rights in different work locations, EU and GIZ worked with Palestinian stakeholders to establish "The Palestinian National Center for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection at PPU”. The center will train skilled safety officers, specialists and inspectors in order to meet the needs and requirements of safety and public health within the Palestinian labour market.

The objective of this center is to enhance Palestinian economic development through insuring safe work environment, leading to a substantial reduction of work-related accidents, injuries and diseases, and better employment records for youth. For this purpose the EU supported COSHEP with the establishment of four up-to-date labs in:

  1. Engineering Hazards Safety Lab.

  2. First Aid Lab and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

  3. Fire Alarm and Fighting Lab.

  4. Personal Protective Equipment Lab.

In addition to the opening ceremony, the National Center celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health Professionals. This day is held annually to recall the importance of assuring a decent work environment with healthy and safe working conditions. In Palestine, this day was launched by initiative of this Center and the Ministry of Labour, the Palestinian Workers' Union and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to emphasize the prevention of accidents and diseases in the workplace, taking advantage of the traditional tripartite partnership in the productive process, namely Governments and representative organizations of workers and employers. Nine companies

that are particularly distinguished in their commitment to health and safety measures were honoured under the patronage of the MoL and the COSHEP.

The international celebration today focuses in particular on risks in high buildings and the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases at the global level. High buildings are high risk-environments unless they comply with occupational safety and health standards, as a study of the Palestinian Ministry of Labour noted that the highest proportion of work-related accidents is in the construction sector.

This celebration is an essential part of the global strategy for occupational safety and health and environmental protection. Main pillar of this strategy is to use this day as an important tool for raising awareness about making the workplace safe and healthy and to raise political attention towards health and occupational safety, demanding a greater effort to raise preventive awareness among employers and workers with regard to occupational risks and the prevention of work accidents and occupational diseases and ensuring the provision of occupational health services effectively in all sectors.
